Marvel Comic Books

We have read them, throughout the years and have followed them like a cult following and even now as they create more films with our favorite characters we can't help but buy the DVD. Marvel comic books have been around for a long time and have entertained us as kids and still do for most people as adults too. Who can even forget the famous words of the Hulk "smash em" or "Hulk Smash" which usually where the only words he spoke and of course "my spider senses are tingling" which was what Peter Parker, who is basically Spiderman would say when he felt trouble was on the way.

Over the years the way the comics were changed and infact they can now be downloaded from internet or read online, which now takes comic books even further than they could get before, and they are now reaching people who had never heard of Daredevil or Electra nor read about them.

The Marvel Comic Books have basketball the years changed with different artist taking over the helm of drawing the character according to the original only with their design, making also the theme of the comic books change. The new ones have even changed the outfits with Wolverine's tight yellow spandex suit being replaced with basketball black and blue. The story has also changed with the times and the presidents that have come and gone as well as the disasters that have happened.

Even with all the changes that has gone on all over the world we still see fit too look for a comic store so as to see what is new in the life of Spidey, X men, Fantastic Four and many other characters that have been portrayed in the Marvel Comic Books.

To Team or Not to Team?

Everyone thinks teams are a good thing. Leaders like to form teams. People, for the most part believe in the value and purpose of teams . . .

All of us are smarter than each of us.

1 + 1 = 3

. . . are just two common phrases that reinforce and prove how pervasive our belief in teams is.

And that belief is justified.

Sometimes.

There are many times in our civic or church groups, and in our businesses and professional associations that we need teams of people to work on an issue or a project. And sometimes we would be better off without a team - with individuals contributing as individuals.

What?

No team?

You got it.

At least not the type of team you probably think of, when you think of a team.

Two Basic Types of Teams

To keep things simple, I believe there are two basic types of teams. There are basketball teams and there are track and field teams.

Basketball Teams

Basketball teams (or soccer or hockey) are teams that require, by the nature of their task, that everyone play as one unit. On teams in these sports the players are interdependent. At any moment of any game, in order to be successful, the entire team needs to be working in harmony. The role of each player is designated by their position (which takes into account their innate strengths and acquired skills). However, the situation at any moment during the flow of the game, may require any player to take any role.

And on good teams of this sort, all players are willing to be flexible, to assist, to change roles, to do what it takes. Because they know that without working together, they cant achieve their team goals of victory. The nature of the game forces interdependency among the team members.

Track and Field Teams

Players on track and field teams on the other hand (except in a few relay events) are not interdependent, they are independent. Shot putters have a skill set that is largely unrelated to the sprinters. And the high jumpers can be personally skilled and successful without any tangible basketball or support from the distance runners.

At the end of the day (or meet), the team can win if enough of the individuals do well. In other words if enough individuals win, the team will win. The most successful of these teams will have highly talented individual contributors, supporting each other to reach their common goal of winning. In this way they are definitely a team. basketball may feel allegiance to the group. They certainly can have pride in being a part of the group. They want each other to be successful. They know that they can all be more successful when each individual is more successful. They can have a common goal (to win the meet or championship). But the fundamental relationship between the players isnt the same as it is on a basketball team.

What This Means to Us

In our organizations we most likely have both sorts of teams. We have teams that work in a process flow or project where the outputs of one person directly affect the work of the next where the work and the people are highly interdependent.

We also have teams that look more like the track and field team. In these situations people are working toward a common mission and goal, but their work doesnt intersect in nearly the same ways as for the highly interdependent teams.

Fair enough you say.

But in my experience, we tend to want all teams to think they are basketball teams. If the work or project dictates that focus, great. But if you have a track and field (independent) team, you dont need the same focus on interdependence and traditional team building activities.

What Do We Do Now?

If you lead a team or form teams or are just a member of a team, you need to think about and talk about this distinction. Determine across the team (or future team) what type of team you are. Once there is agreement on the type of team you are, you can begin to set the right kinds of expectations for each other and for yourself. You can build more appropriate plans for training, development and team building.

Knowing which type of team your work or project dictates is the first step towards helping that group of people be more successful and the work being done successfully.

So maybe it isnt really, to team or not to team?, but which type of team?

. . . that is the question.

Answer that one first. And, using the answer as a guide, watch all of your teams be more successful.

Why Players Fail at Defense

I've seen many players who have got basketball offensive skills basketball should be proud to have such amazing skills. They're the envy of many players. Some players are even cocky enough to show off and taunt the other players. But I honestly could say, that many of those players could have a real touch up on their defense.

Why do players have so much trouble on their defense? Well there are several reasons:

  • Too lazy to move their feet quickly
  • Uncoordinated
  • Think that their teammates can pick up their slack
  • Defense is useless to them
  • The believe that offense is more important than defense

The last point is probably the most common excuse I've heard. I was talking to a bunch of my friends who play basketball and they kept on talking about how they need to fix their shot, or how many points they scored in a game, and I never hear my friends mention anything about how they played defense. Now, I know that defense isn't the greatest part of the game, and it can be the most boring part to some people, but if you shine at defense, people will start appreciating at how you play the game.

If laziness is your issue, then you have to start realizing that defense is as important, or even more important than offense. If you tell yourself that, then your laziness may fade away since you actually want to play defense.

If you are uncoordinated, then it's not entirely your fault since you can be born uncoordinated. Try improving your balance since this could be the main reason if you are uncoordinated and slow on your feet.

If you think that your teammates can pick up your slack or if you think that defense is the least important part of the game, then you have got a completely wrong mindset to the game. Your goal in basketball is to give your best effort and help your teammates out, not let them work for you. And every part of the game is essential to succeed, so you have to start realizing that defense is important.

Balanced Skills One of the biggest things I hate to see is somebody thrive at one part of basketball, but fail miserably at another part. Keep in mind that you should be improving your overall basketball skill, not just one set of skills. It's kind of like when you are weight training. Don't lift weights on just one side of your body, or just a certain muscle group, because you will grow muscles in one area of your body, and in another part you'll be weak.

1. Diet! Your muscles need the energy to be able to perform at their peak level. The best way to get this energy quickly is to eat healthy carbs. I stress HEALTHY carbs. I weigh 190 pounds so I eat 190 grams of protein per day. This will give you long lasting energy as well as allow your muscles to repair themselves faster after a workout.

2. Exercise! You should do a jump routine every day. The best time to work out is in the morning about 30 minutes after breakfast. Do things like squats, lunges, calf raises, etc. When doing these exercises, focus on quick, explosive motions instead of the slow, powerlifting style. Strength + Quickness = Explosion!

3. Dedication! You have to get in the right mindset in order to see the results that you are hoping for. This is the most basketball aspect of jump training. Do not get discouraged if you don't see any gains for a while. Just stick with it! Simple Exercises To Improve Your Vertical Leap

Basketball players always aim to improve their vertical leap. It is because they idolize the famous and very amazing NBA players, doing dunks that are fit for a powerhouse treatment.

To be able to do such power dunks and at the same time, improve their play, basket ball players do several special exercises that could greatly improve their vertical leap.

Here are some of the most recommended exercises compiled to help you improve your vertical leap.

1. WARMING UP

Prior to starting exercises, warming up your basketball would be imperative. Do stretchings properly, or jog around even for just a few minutes.

Use a jump rope. Jumping ropes definitely help in conditioning the body.

Run up and down the stairs for a while. It can be a very useful and simple warm up, or can also be treated like a full exercise. However, do not do too much of it because you may eventually wear out your legs. You can use it as a quick warm up, in some cases, a full exercise.

2. JUMPING EXERCISES

Of course trainings for improving vertical leaps would greatly involve exercises that are specially designed for jumping. The following simple and easy-to-do exercises can be done wherever you may be, whenever.

a. Deep Knee Bends. basketball up. Bend your knees in a slow motion while at the same time making sure the back is kept straight. Then, crouch down slowly to the farthest you can go. Repeat the task for about 15 times. If you decide to execute the exercise on a regular basis, increase the repetition to 20, then 30 and so on. Doing such would ensure the strength of the muscles in the leg portion are stronger by a level.

b. Perform the Toe Raises. Stand up, then raise your leg until you could touch with one hand the tip of a toe. Pull down and repeat on the other leg. Do the motion slowly. Make 30 to 50 repetitions for this simple exercise.

c. Stomach Crunches. Regular sit ups would not be helpful, but a variation to the stomach crunches would be effective. To do that, lie down the floor, make sure the back is strictly straightened. Then, rise up by initially lifting the shoulders from the floor. Do the simple task for 10 minutes, in the morning and at night.

Moreover, the above mentioned simple exercises would surely help those who want to improve and increase their vertical leaps. But, as experts would say, no great things and goals are achieved overnight. How to Increase Vertical Leap, Speed and Agility

Here are a few exercises that when done properly will definitely increase your leg strength, quickness and vertical leap. Being able to jump higher should just be a nice by-product. If basketball want to become a real basketball player instead of just a dunking freak show at the local playground, you'll value how these drills will help you to stay in front of your man on defense, and maintain good steady feet when a taller/bigger player tries to post you up. Not to mention just having great overall conditioning.

The body's ability to adapt
Anyone who has ever had a physical job over an extended period of time will be aware of the body's ability to adapt. If you have spent your summer working in a shop for example you may have noticed how during the first few days your leg and back muscles might have been aching, not to mention your feet. Or maybe you worked on a construction site for 3 months and all of a sudden found you needed to spend half of your hard earned money on a new wardrobe because your old clothes didn't fit anymore. The conclusion therefore is that if your body is placed outside of its comfort zone, it will try its hardest to adapt. Now to the drills:

If it was good enough for Rocky...
Do some light skipping for 10 minutes just to get warmed up. If you want to impress see how many doubles you can do in a row, or cross your arms every now and then.

First things first
Stretching. Do it. I'm not going to go into it. But do it.

Today's dare is to walk like a penguin (to stop shin splints)
This is a stretch/exercise to help prevent shin splints. Some people are more susceptible to them than others. Shin splints are caused by a muscle imbalance in your calf. This exercise can help prevent them from occurring. Just spend a few minutes every couple of hours walking around on your heals as demonstrated in picture 1.1. If you do them correctly you will feel the muscles behind your shins working and the pain caused by frequent jumping should start to easy off over time.

Rendering chairs obsolete
I want to make a note here that I'll take no responsibility what so ever if the chair industry goes out of business. The drill is simple enough. Sit against a basketball as displayed in picture 1.2 with your legs bent at a near 90 angle. Your thighs should be working hard to keep your back pressed against the wall. So hard, that after a certain amount of time, depending on how strong they are, they will start shaking like mad. If you are new to this exercise don't overdo it the first time. Gradually find out where your limit is. Your thighs could end up aching for weeks if you don't, and you can forget dunking. Just walking up stairs alone will become a challenge. Also make sure to keep your back straight. As an addition you can have a friend annoy you by passing you a ball while your thighs burn like mad.

Find your centre (whilst standing on a ball)
This exercise takes a bit of practice, but once mastered will help prevent knee injuries along with helping you develop a great sense of balance. It specifically targets small little used and therefore underdeveloped muscle groups within your knees. Which in turn affects your explosiveness. The exercise itself is easy enough. Just stand on a ball. You might want to do it in front of a wall at first, so you can balance yourself properly and gain a feel for it. Over time no wall should be necessary. When you can get on to the ball without any support and stay on there for as long as you want, you might want to give yourself some challenges. Like passing another ball around your body in a ring motion.

Plyometrics
Unlike the muscle building drills above the following drills are classed as plyometrics. While previously we discussed how to build up leg strength these drills are meant to increase your explosiveness. Note that plyometrics alone will not be enough to increase your vertical leap. Ideally you will want to find the optimal combination of plyometrics, strength exercises, endurance drills, diet and rest to experience optimal vertical leap gains. Backboards can be used for more than layups
During this drill you will hold a ball with both hands, jump up, and touch the backboard with the ball. In this version the ball never leaves your hands. Try to complete twenty reps with a one-minute brake before the next set. If you cannot reach the backboard, or do not have one available, try using a marked wall instead. Also, instead of increasing the number of reps, try to increase the height of the point that the ball is making contact with.

Tipping Alternative
By jumping and tipping the ball against the backboard you will not only be working on your explosiveness. You might be confronted with a situation during a game where you can't get to a rebound but can keep the ball alive by tipping it against the backboard. With a bit of practice you should be able to control that tip to the extent where you can tip it so it comes down in a location where you can grab the rebound, or if on offence, can tip the ball into the basket.

Line drills aren't just there to torture you
Coaches make their players do line drills over and over again for a reason. If you do them regularly you will find a huge increase in the speed of your first step and sprinting ability. This will naturally also help your vertical leap. If you don't know what a line drill is: you sprint from baseline to the first free throw line, then back to baseline, then halfway line and back, then second free throw line and back, then full court and back. If you are doing this alone, get someone to time you and work towards setting up a personal best. Otherwise if there is a group of you make it more interesting by saying the losers have to do 20 push-ups.

Clear it or stack it (jumping sideways over an object)
Sideways jumps will help you out a lot on defence. Set up an obstacle, like a cone or a few books. Make sure the object isn't to high, as you will be jumping over it in sideways motions, back and forth 30 times. Jumping again as soon as your feet make contact with the ground. Repeated quick takeoffs are the key to successful plyometric training and optimal vertical leap gains. See picture 1.3.

Tired of falling over your own feet? (180 Jumps)
Position yourself so you have enough room to complete 30 jumps where you change direction each time. As you can guess along with quickness and all the other usual benefits this plyometric exercise will help you improve your coordination.

Run
I know a lot of players would rather go and find a local pickup game than go on a 20 min run. Lets face reality: the pickup game is the more enjoyable choice. No coaches yanking you from the game for your shot selection and you are not going to be pushing yourself to the limit like on a run. Still, going on a 20-30 minute run 3 times per week will improve your stamina immensely come game time. Because you are putting your body under a different kind of stress than during games and training (where you get to stop every 30 seconds for a short breather) you will become a more complete athlete. The goal here is not to become a marathon runner though. A 20-30 minute run at a good fast pace will give you better basketball related results.

Diet
Lebron James did not get his body from living on fast food. Repeat: Lebron James did not get his body from living on fast food. If you are one of those individuals who believe they can eat what they want to just because they do sport: fine. It's true. You will burn off calories. That's a fact. But if you are serious about developing your body you will have to change your ways I'm afraid. Fast food simply doesn't contain the building blocks that you need in order to build up a real athlete's body. Let alone a 40 inch vertical leap. If you don't watch your diet all the exercises here are good for is burning calories. For proper results you need to start taking in a high dose of protein, potassium and all the other good stuff. Read up on some diet articles online, or invest some money into a few health magazines. They tend to print the same information over and over again, so you will only need to buy a few issues. Or don't, and just use this as a more complicated and painful calorie-burning program. Your choice.

A great investment
Have you guessed it yet? It is, drum roles: a gym membership. No, not only meatheads and Madonna go to the gym. Basketball players are allowed there too. You might want to ask a personal trainer to help you put together a program that will help you gain strength, while at the same time increase your flexibility, mobility, and speed to go along with your vertical leap.

Conclusion
I haven't noted down a specific training regime with sets here because everyone's body is different. Especially in regard to plyometrics, some will find doing 3 sets of each a walk in the park while others will be lying flat on their backs for weeks after the same amount. You will have to judge your own limits. Make sure you get enough rest between sets though. If you don't give your body enough time to heal, you will be doing it a lot more damage than good. This is another reason why a good diet is vital. It will speed up your recovery time. This will also mean that you should try to group these exercises together as much as possible. Having 3 intensive workouts per week, and loads of rest in between will give you better results that sporadically doing drills twice per day.

Leonards Hope - A Love For Basketball

With the rain falling against the pavement like an out basketball tune musical instrument I found myself walking next to an older gentlemen who had clearly not taken the easy path in life. As the rain drops lit up his tattered unshaven face, the gentleman managed to glance in my direction and under a muted monotonic voice he opened my eyes to lives great adventures. Standing together under the cover of a Portland city bus stop, two ordinary strangers came together to share in our common passion-basketball.

It was at this moment, I discovered my new friend was a basketball legend in the great state of Utah in the early 60's. He had walked through life's journey guided by the comfort of a bouncing rubber basketball and a dream to be noticed by one of Oregon's many high level institutions. Yet, struggles of the street had stabbed my friend; this was clear by his rundown appearance. Leonard-I would come to know him by-had left the confines of his small Utah town as a legend and was transplanted in the heart of the Northwest to pursue 'hope' and 'opportunity' to better his life through the game of basketball.

Not unlike Leonard, I too traveled through life with a found optimism the game of basketball could provide. As we basketball stood under the bus stop and watched as the rain continued to pound the passing cars on Martin Luther King Avenue, it was clear basketball had provided me with so much and failed embrace Leonard. You see I had found some success as a varsity basketball coach at a young age and later as an author of a series of E-books and founder of a basketball resources website dedicated to providing inexpensive resources to future coaches around the country. In a harsh splash of reality, the integrity of the game had challenged the dreams of us both and walked two total strangers to the breaking point of opportunity. Two Minute Drill

Off-season or In-Season Individual Development Workout

This is the best Individual Development drill that we have seen. It develops:

1. Ability to shoot free throws under pressure

2. Conditioning

3. Footwork coming basketball of a screen or cut

4. Three-point shooting

5. Mental Toughness/Competitiveness

6. Making shots under pressure

Basketball players are highly competitive people by nature; therefore it is beneficial to design drills that provide an opportunity for players to compete against other players or against themselves. The competition increases the player's enthusiasm for the drill and results in better intensity during the training session. The Two Minute Drill requires only one player. The players compete against themselves for their best score. However, it is extremely helpful to have someone timing the drill.

Many players practice free throws by shooting 100, 200 or possibly more in each practice session. While volume shooting is an important part of developing confidence and rhythm on free throws, this type of practice does not subject the player to the same conditions that exist while attempting free throws during a game. Pressure and fatigue are just two factors that may affect free throw percentage. To be a successful free throw shooter in games, players must be able to step to the line a make two in a row while fatigued and under pressure.

The Two Minute Drill is designed for player to do just that. Players must step to the free throw line and make two pressure free throws while fatigued. The objective of the Two Minute Drill Game is for the player to move from level one to the highest level possible. In order to advance from one level to another, the player must make a power lay-up, a spin-and-catch intermediate shot and a three point shot. The player must shoot until he/she has made each shot, even if s/he misses each one four times, the level is not completed until each of the three shots goes in. After making the three-point shot the player immediately (with no rest!) steps to the free throw line to shoot a one-and-one free throw. If the player makes both free throws he/she advances to the next level and repeats the same sequence. If the player misses a free throw he/she must remain on that level.

The drill is timed for two minutes. The stopwatch only runs while the player is shooting shots from the field, like a game. It does not run during free throws. If there is no one to time the player can wear a sport watch to time him/herself. The timing of the drill is very significant to its effectiveness because the clock pushes the player to run hard after rebounds and to shoot shots that are more game-like. However, if no timer is available, the player must push him/herself to go hard. To make it competitive, the shooter can be limited to a total number of misses or to commit that the first missed free throw will end the game.

Players compete each practice session against the highest level they have ever achieved. They may also compete against other players by seeing which player reaches the highest level in a given amount of time.

The game may be altered to more benefit to post players. Post players may choose to substitute the three-point shots or the intermediate shots with jump hooks or other post moves. It is easy to come up with several other variations to keep the drill from becoming monotonous.

How to Help Your Child Choose a Sport

Sports and kids; the two go hand in hand. But when faced with specific sports, how are parents and kids to decide? For example, when school starts back up, it won't be long before there are football games to attend. Then it's basketball in the winter. Springtime gives you soccer, baseball, and swimming. With all the options and only so much time, how do you know what kids sports to sign your child up for?

I guess the first and most important thing you need to find out is if your child is even interested in sports. If they aren't, then it's probably best not to force them into doing anything they don't want to do, especially if it's to relive your own past or current interests. The child needs to have an interest to begin with, otherwise, they'll not only resent the sport, but also you for making them play it. I suppose that if your kids aren't interested in sports, you could probably stop reading this article, or better yet, find another one that interests you. But for the parents who have to deal with this conundrum, we shall continue. Sports Photography- Learn from the Shoot

We all have a choice in what we decide to shoot, or what we decide to include in our shots. Of course,
what we choose often depends on our perspective. That perspective is what makes each individual
photographer, unique. Our uniqueness is usually acquired from our previous life experiences.

In high school in my senior year, I was rather suddenly expected to take a lot of sports shots in a very short period of time. Now if you are a big sports fan that might have seemed like a great assignment. My only sports involvement at that point in time was racket ball and track and field, both of which focus on the individual. Team sports like volleyball, football, basketball, and baseball were totally unknown to me, yet that was what I was supposed to shoot. As I have mentioned in other articles; I quickly came up with the philosophy of: if it has the word Ball in the title, then follow the ball.

At that point in time, I was already aware that clutter in the background was not a good thing. My rule to live by was simply shoot simple. The problem that arose is how do you simplify the shot, if you shoot two teams (us and them) who both have 10 or 20 people, and are running all over the place?

I started with volleyball. In this case, it didnt take me long to figure out that the net was just as important as the ball. I did follow the ball around for a while, but I found out that this can be really frustrating too. Sometimes the action can get going so fast that its really hard to tell what the peak action is, until after youve already missed it. I started positioning myself to be able to shoot right down the length of the net. There I found; when the ball was at the net and someone was trying to spike or block the ball, was a great peak action moment. I was able to simplify the shot because I got the elements I wanted (teams, the ball, the net, peak action); not the elements I didnt want (arms, heads, and legs) in the way, blocking my shots.

When I went to do football, the first thing I realized is that I needed to be closer. A 200mm lens from the bleacher may get you close to a cheerleader, but not much else. Unlike the volleyball, I soon realized that one vantage point was not going to cut it. The game was simply played on much too large an area for me to cover it properly. I divided the game up into shooting sections; 20 minutes on the fifty yard line, 20 minutes from our end zone, 20 minutes from their end zone, etc. I kept my eye on the ball, but each location brought a new perspective.

Basketball, I quickly determined basketball shooting characteristics of both of the other two sports. Most peak action does occur around the basket; however the interaction with the crowd is much more basketball The fans at a football game are still 30 or 40 feet away from where the action is; in basketball they are often 3 or 4 feet away. When they get up and start cheering, it gets worse. The difference that made was, in reality I was not as free to move around as I had been in either of the other two events. But on the other hand, I was also able to get many more shots with the fans reactions too. It was as if I now had to plan for three teams (ours, theirs, and the fans).

Baseball was both the most frustrating and most rewarding for me to learn how to shoot. It was frustrating because my movements were more limited than before. It was not because of the crowds, it was because it was not allowed. I could work around the crowds if I needed, but photographers are not allowed to stand in the middle of the outfield. I could shoot from either dugout or from behind the batters cage. Visually they were all spread out; it seemed impossible, then I remembered thinking: Simply shoot simple. I shot individuals at first and third base. I shot them as they got the ball. I shot them as guys came in for a slide. I shot the batter and pitcher by putting my lens right up against the fence and looking over the batters' shoulder.

I only shot sports for a very short period in my photographic career, but I believe I learned a lot from shooting in these different environments.

A) From volleyball, I learned to shoot smart. Dont just wave your camera all over the place and hope you get lucky. Find the key location for peak action.

B) From football, I learned to shoot systematically. If the action happens at several locations dont just wander from place to place. Focus your attention on one perspective at a time, and then move on.

C) From basketball, I learned to incorporate obstacles. Fans were blocking my shots, until they became part of the shots. Expressions in the background gave my shots an emotional edge.

D) From baseball, I remembered Simply shoot simple. By being forced to shoot from a certain vantage point, I actually was able to simplify my images more than I had planned.

The thing I learned from all of them is that, perspective is everything. If you ever have to shoot something you know little or nothing about, learn to observe. What makes this event or item unique? What you shoot or do not shoot comes down to a matter of choice; but what you choose to shoot is based on your perspective.
